What is Vogelbescherming?
The Vogelbescherming (in Dutch: Bird Conservation) works on the conservation of wild birds and their habitats in the Netherlands and (within the scope of BirdLife International) abroad. Birds are the entry point and flagship species for data-gathering and -analysing. With a focus on species, sites, habitats, legislation and lobby and network building.
What does Vogelbescherming do?
- Activities are based on the Dutch Red List for Birds, Globally Threatened Birds, Species of European Conservation Concern, Dutch and international lists of Important Bird Areas (IBA’s), Endemic Bird Areas (EBA’s, important habitats for birds);
- Conservation projects for threatened and endangered bird species, IBA’s (including IBA-caretakers) and EBA’s;
- Publications: Vogels (for adult membership, 6 issues/year), Vrije Vogels (for youth membership, 4 issues/year), Vogelnieuws (for active volunteers and national network, 4 issues/year) and various reports and books on conservation issues, including Red Lists, etc;
- Creating public awareness;
- Lobbying and advocacy; EU Birds and Habitat Directives;
- National and local co-operation, international co-operation (within the BirdLife network).
