Wat is EAZA?
EAZA the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, represents and links more than 300 member institutions in 35 countries. Formed in 1992, EAZA's mission is to facilitate cooperation within the European zoo and aquarium community towards the goals of education, research and conservation.

Wat doet EAZA?

  • Promote cooperation for furthering regional collection planning and wildlife conservation, particulary through internationally coordinated breeding programmes of wild animals such as the European Endangered Species Programmes (EEP).
  • Promote education, in particular environmental education.
  • Contribute to relevant meetings and discussions of the supra-international organisations, such as the United Nations, The World Conservation Union - IUCN , European Union, the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Plant and Animal Species (CITES) etc.
  • Advise, as required, the European Union, or other representative committees such as the European Parliament and the European Council.
Waarom is EAZA lid van IUCN?
EAZA is the world’s largest professional zoo and aquarium association in terms of institutional membership. All EAZA members are required to promote and support conservation, both in situ and ex situ, and it is therefore natural that our association should cooperate closely with the world’s largest conservation organisation; IUCN.

Cooperation takes place at many levels, most notably through the various specialist groups of the IUCN Species Survival Commission. An increasing number of EAZA members use the Red List in their informational signage, and membership of the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication is also quite common within the EAZA community.
